The Three Angels' Messages
A Historicist Reading of Revelation 14:6–12
Revelation 14 explicitly proclaims the everlasting gospel, Creator worship and judgment, Babylon’s fall, a warning against the beast and its mark, and the saints’ endurance, commandments, and faith. It does not explicitly identify the Sabbath as God’s seal, Sunday as the beast’s mark, the papacy as the sea beast, or the United States as the land beast. Those identifications belong to this book’s Adventist historicist interpretation and are presented separately from the wording of the passage.
Preterist and critical-historical readings relate much of the imagery to Roman imperial power. Futurist readings expect a final Antichrist crisis, while idealist readings see a recurring conflict between faithful worship and idolatrous power. Catholic, Orthodox, and most non-Adventist Protestant interpreters do not treat the passage as a Sabbath-versus-Sunday forecast or a denominational charter.
