The 1260-Year Timeline

The classic historicist calculation and its selected historical markers

"And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time."

Daniel 7:25

This page follows the classic Protestant historicist method, including its identification of Daniel’s little horn with the papal system. It then presents the Adventist use of 538 and 1798 as the period’s historical markers. The symbols, time conversion, and endpoints are interpretive premises; none is supplied by the arithmetic alone.

Other readers organize the same texts differently. Antiochene and many preterist readings locate Daniel’s crisis in the persecution under Antiochus IV and relate Revelation’s beast imagery to imperial Rome. Futurists place the chief persecuting power and time period in a final crisis. Idealists read the images as recurring patterns of idolatrous empire and faithful endurance. Non-Adventist Protestants can be found in all four schools, and many do not accept the 538–1798 pairing.

How the Historicist Calculation Works

1 "A time" is read as 1 schematic year 1 year
2 "Times" is read as 2 schematic years + 2 years
3 "Dividing of time" is read as half a year + ½ year
4 Total prophetic years = 3½ years
5 The related expressions are correlated: 3½ times, 42 months, and 1,260 days (Rev 12:6, 14; 13:5) 3½ times = 1,260 days
6 That correlation implies schematic 30-day months and 360-day years 42 × 30 = 1,260
7 Historicist day-year rule, extended by analogy from two enacted signs (Num 14:34; Ezek 4:6) = 1,260 years
AD 538 + 1,260 years = AD 1798
